The Battle of Gettysburg, which was fought from July 1st to July 3rd 1863 was the largest battle ever fought in North America. The battle, which was fought in the rolling hills and fields of south central Pennsylvania, was called the high tide of the Confederacy and resulted in 53,000 casualties.
