About
The Battle of the Philippine Sea, which was fought in June 1944, was a major battle that eliminated the Japanese Navy's ability to conduct large-scale carrier operations. It took place during the U.S. amphibious invasion of the Mariana Islands. This was the largest carrier vs. carrier battle in history, involving 24 aircraft carriers, deploying roughly 1,350 carrier-based aircraft. It saw elements of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet against ships and aircraft of the Japanese Navy's Mobile Fleet. Duane E. Shaffer presents the strategy and tactics of this important battle. Programs are open to the public, no registration required.
